Oracy, the Fourth R of Education: what schools need to know
Tuesday 5th May 2026, 4 - 4.45pm
It is an exciting time for oracy in education. The "Fourth R" isn’t just coming - it’s here. The ability to speak, listen and communicate confidently are essential skills for learning and for life.
With oracy now included in the Schools White Paper, Curriculum and Assessment Review, Writing Framework and evolving SEND policy, it is no longer a ‘nice to have’.
As Schools Minister Georgia Gould declared at our recent Speaking Summit: “Oracy is as foundational as numeracy, literacy, and writing.” It’s encouraging to see oracy being so widely recognised as a core skill alongside reading, writing and numeracy.
Why Now?
This is an incredibly exciting moment for Senior Leadership Teams. School Leaders are facing critical questions: What does "high-quality oracy education" actually look like? How does it work? And what are schools expected to do in response?
